SIC in Roxbury
The Social Impact Center (SIC) is the non-profit arm of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, with a mission to create educational and economic development programs to strengthen the Roxbury community. SIC’s partnership with Dearborn Middle School has brought about a wholesale transformation of that school. Learning Out Loud, our Saturday tutoring program, helps students improve test scores, while SIC’s community organizing, in partnership with Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, has resulted in the Dearborn becoming a 6-12 Early College STEM Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). In 2012, SIC added Higginson-Lewis School as a second partner, involving students in Learning Out Loud and helping organize parents and teachers to advocate on behalf of the school. SIC also provides support and boosts school morale through donated supplies, teacher appreciation breakfasts and more.
White House Award Winner!
Roxbury Presbyterian Church’s Social Impact Center was awarded a “Together for Tomorrow School Improvement Champion” by The White House Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships for its work at the Dearborn School.
Game Changer Group
In response to two daytime shootings in spring of 2013, including one directly in front of the church just as we were taking students to the Big Apple Circus, SIC began to work with area non-profits and residents on new ways to stem violence. Meeting weekly with Higher Ground, NAACP, Mothers for Justice & Equality and others, the efforts became known as Game Changer Group. SIC brought young people to testify at statewide hearings on gun violence prevention, hosted large community meetings well-attended by youth and began to meet with troubled young adults at Warren Gardens. Rev. Liz Walker was named Crime Fighter of the Year for this work, which is ongoing.
